The South Florida Regional Transportation Authority's (SRFTA) board recently awarded a contract to Brookville Equipment Corp. to provide 10 new commuter locomotives for the Tri-Rail system.
The Brookville BL36PH locomotives, scheduled for delivery in the second half of 2012, will be paid for in part with a $16 million American Recovery and Reinvestment Act grant, SRFTA officials said in a prepared statement.
The contract includes an option to purchase up to 17 additional locomotives, up to four of which are earmarked for Sound Transit in Seattle, according to SRFTA.
The aerodynamic locomotives will be manufactured at Brookville’s Pennsylvania plant and be equipped with a MTU Detroit Diesel 3,600-horsepower, EPA Tier 3-compliant engine.
