Norfolk Southern Corp. has named Donald Graab vice president of mechanical to succeed Tim Heilig, who plans to retire after serving NS for 41 years. Graab will be responsible for maintenance and repair of all motive power and rolling stock.

Most recently assistant vice president of mechanical, Graab joined NS predecessor Norfolk and Western Railway Co. in 1978 as a training instructor and gradually advanced in the mechanical department posts. He began his railroading career in 1975 as a management trainee in the Illinois Central Gulf Railroad’s mechanical department.

Heilig joined NS predecessor Southern Railway Co. in 1971 and served in various management information, intermodal, engineering, mechanical and transportation positions before being named VP of mechanical in 2006.

“Tim Heilig’s leadership of the mechanical department enabled Norfolk Southern to achieve remarkable technological progress and efficiencies in our rolling stock fleet … [and] we’re grateful for his decades of outstanding service,” said NS Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Wick Moorman in a prepared statement.

NS also announced that Wes Bush has joined its board. Bush is chairman, president and CEO of Northrop Grumman Corp., and previously was the company’s chief operating officer and chief financial officer.
