Norfolk Southern Railway partnered with 120 companies to facilitate 159 industrial development projects valued at a combined $3.2 billion in 2022, the company announced yesterday.

Customers for which NS provided industrial development support include:

Commercial Metals Co., for a $450 million project to build a rebar steel mill in West Virginia;

• Packaging Corp. of America, for a $440 million investment to produce linerboard used for corrugated packaging in Jackson, Alabama;

Mark Anthony Brewing, for a $400 million project involving a new state-of-the-art brewery and production facility in Richland, South Carolina;

NewCold, for a $333 million project involving building and operating an advanced, large-scale distribution facility in McDonough, Georgia;

CONSOL Energy, for a $100 million project to open the Itmann Preparation Plant in Itmann, West Virginia, to produce premium, low-vol metallurgical coking coal to serve the domestic and international steel markets; and

Fairwinds Landing, for a $100 million project in Norfolk, Virginia, to transform Lambert's Point Docks into a maritime operations and logistics center that supports the offshore wind, defense and transportation industries.

"We help our clients identify rail-served sites that offer companies reliable, sustainable and efficient transportation for their shipments," said NS Group Vice President of Industrial Development Craig Hudson in a press release.

NS's pipeline of customer initiatives in 2023 includes 33 companies that have announced plans for a new production facility or a significant plant expansion along the NS rail network or with one of its short-line partners.

The announcements represent $30 billion in projected investment and are prime opportunities for business development, NS officials said. For example, in May 2022, Hyundai Motor Group announced plans to invest $5.54 billion in Bryan County, Georgia, for the company's first fully dedicated electric vehicle and battery manufacturing plant.
