NS reassigns seven execs, sets another loading record at Virginia coal transload facility

Norfolk Southern Corp. yesterday announced seven executive appointments. Six are effective Nov. 1 and the other takes effect Oct. 1.

The railroad named:

• Clyde "Jake" Allison Jr., currently vice president and controller, VP of audit and compliance. Since joining NS in 1993, he has served stints as manager of internal audit, assistant VP of strategic sourcing, AVP of accounting operations and AVP of corporate accounting;

• Fredric Ehlers, currently VP of network and service management, VP of information technology. He joined NS in 1985 as a management trainee and since has served as AVP-executive and VP of customer service;

• Jerry Hall, currently VP of intermodal operations, VP of network and service management. Since joining NS in 1986 as a management trainee, he was held various posts, including general manager of the northern region;

• Thomas Hurlbut, currently VP of audit and compliance, VP and controller. He joined NS in 1992 and previously served as AVP of internal audit;

• Denise Hutson, currently assistant corporate secretary, corporate secretary to succeed Howard McFadden. Hutson, who began her NS career in 1994, will assume the post on Oct. 1;

• Alan Shaw, currently group VP of chemicals, VP of intermodal operations. He joined NS in 1994 and since has held various positions, including group VP of coal marketing; and

• Thomas Werner, currently VP of information technology, VP and treasurer. He joined NS in 1999.

NS also announced that Pier 6 at its Lamberts Point coal transload facility in Norfolk, Va., set another loading record. On Sept. 21, workers loaded 168,977 net tons of coking coal into a ship destined for China, breaking the record of 166,840 net tons set days earlier on Sept. 18.

The tonnage not only set a high-water mark for Pier 6 — which is marking its 50th anniversary — but for loading facilities in the United States, where the pier is the top performer among more than a dozen export terminals on the East, Gulf, and West coasts, NS officials said in a press release.
