NS to permanently protect wetlands in South Carolina
Norfolk Southern Railway yesterday announced plans to permanently protect 1,105 acres of wetlands along South Carolina’s coastal plain through a conservation easement.
The "ecologically significant land" is home to the Coldwater Branch Stream and Wetland Mitigation Bank at Brosnan Forest, NS' 14,400-acre timber and wildlife preserve northwest of Charleston, NS officials said in a press release.
The easement, which is the third easement donated by NS to Lowcountry Land Trust, advances the Class I's wetlands conservation and restoration initiatives. LLT protects more than 150,000 acres of ecologically significant lands in the state, with Brosnan Forest being the largest in its portfolio. The Brosnan Forest easement was donated in 2008 and a second donation was made in 2015.
"Brosnan Forest inspires how we think about sustainability as the heart of our business; it is a model of sustainable forest management and a leader in forest carbon programs to address climate change," said Josh Raglin, chief sustainability officer at NS.
