Norfolk Southern, Kentucky cabinet forge funding pact for Louisville grade crossing project

Efforts to establish a grade crossing hazard elimination project in Louisville will advance because of a funding agreement reached between the state of Kentucky and Norfolk Southern Railway, city officials announced yesterday.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and NS agreed to appropriate $1.8 million in federal funds to install warning devices — such as automatic gates, flashing lights and bells — at seven grade crossings in the Wilson and Woodland avenues area.

The project has encountered many obstacles and delays over the years.

“These safety improvements are still in the early stages,” said Louisville Councilwoman Attica Scott. “We know that the metro government must now plan for installation of these measures while at the same time review right-of-way and road closures, but it is a step in the right direction.”
