Norfolk Southern Railway's engineering department broke a record in 2023 by laying 556 miles of rail. That’s 35 more track miles than 2022's total and the most rail NS has installed since 1990, NS officials said this week in a website post.
The department set the record using the same number of rail laying teams as in 2022.
"The department truly came together as one team in 2023 to achieve these outstanding results that enhanced our infrastructure system wide," said NS Vice President of Engineering Ed Boyle. "These record accomplishments were made possible through extensive planning, coordination, communication and teamwork."
Over the past year, capital production gangs have completed 619 total track miles of rail work — 49 miles more than in 2022; finished tie and surfacing work on 2,562 miles of track; installed 2,099,502 ties; and surfaced 1,745 miles of track.
The dual rail gang laid 310 track miles, the highest amount on record. Two super rail gangs completed 181 track miles and four curve rail gangs completed 127 track miles.
"We look forward to achieving even greater results in the coming year," said NS Chief Operating Officer Paul Duncan.
NS spends about $1 billion annually to replace, rehabilitate and improve its infrastructure.
