Norfolk Southern Railway in 2025 rounded out a decade of operating its Safety Train, completing 16 stops during the past year to provide first responders with training on how to respond to rail-related emergencies.
The Safety Train is part of NS' operation and awareness response program. More than 5,800 first responders were trained through the program in 2025, NS officials said in an online "Story Yard" article.
The Safety Train features boxcar classrooms and specialized tank cars for immersive learning. In training sessions, first responders learn safe practices around railroad track and equipment, how tank car valves and fittings work, best practices for responding to rail emergencies and how to access information about the contents inside rail cars.
"Norfolk Southern deeply values the relationships we have built with first responders across our network over the last decade," said Robert Wood, NS director of hazardous materials. "We are proud to work alongside them and are grateful for their partnership in keeping our railroad and communities safe."
