Cubic wins $12.6 million contract to update BART's revenue management system
Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) awarded a $12.6 million contract to Cubic Transportation Systems (CTS) to update the agency's revenue management system.
The state-of-good-repair project includes adding fare machines, fare gates and parking validator devices to extend the equipment's life, CTS officials said in a press release.
Additionally, new readers for BART's equipment will feature Europay, MasterCard and Visa-compliant open payment capabilities, which will make way for potential use of contactless bankcard and mobile payments.
"The time and money it takes to procure a new revenue management system is significant and Cubic was able to demonstrate the millions of dollars in savings to … riders and taxpayers by updating our current system," said Paul Oversier, BART's assistant general manager of operations. "We will also be well-positioned to transition to next-generation payment technologies in partnership with the region."
BART awarded CTS its first contract in 1974. In 2009, the company took over a contract to integrate the regional Clipper Card contract with partner agencies.
