The American Public Transportation Association has awarded the Southern California Regional Rail Authority and Metrolink with Gold recognition under the APTA Sustainability Commitment Program.
Transit agencies and businesses that join the program pledge to implement processes and action that create continuous improvements in environmental, social and economic sustainability, APTA officials said in a press release.
The Gold-level recognition is based on specific measurable achievements. Metrolink has achieved various goals to ease environmental impacts, including installing a train wash water reclamation system, upgrading storm water management systems, purchasing electric vehicles and recycling e-waste.
Metrolink also recently became the first U.S. passenger-rail agency to power 100% of its locomotives with renewable fuel. The agency’s locomotives are fully powered by recycled natural fats and vegetable oils.
"Metrolink’s leadership in the sustainability and social equity realms, and the successful results of their actions, serves as a road map and an inspiration to other agencies," said APTA President and CEO Paul Skoutelas.
