Albuquerque plans rapid-transit system

Albuquerque, N.M. officials recently announced plans to build a rapid-transit system, which would provide transportation to the city’s major employment and activity centers.
Scheduled to start construction in 2006, the first phase of the project includes rapid transit on Central Avenue between Coors Boulevard and Uptown. The $400 million project is designed to connect Westside, Bio Park, Old Town, Downtown, University of New Mexico, Nob Hill, Hiland District, New Mexico Fairgrounds and Uptown.
A second phase would connect Alvarado Transportation Center with the Sawmill Area, Old Town, Bio Park, Albuquerque Zoo, Hispanic Cultural Center and the future Wheels Museum. The $250 million phase also would connect the airport and downtown.
Financing for the project would come from local and federal funds.
