Alcatel lands German train-control deal

Alcatel recently inked a $36.8 million deal with Germany’s Deutsche Bahn AG to provide a software-based electronic interlocking system designed to monitor and control movements of 750 trains daily in and around Leipzig, as well as a large number of shunting movements.

The company plans to replace the existing relay-based interlocking system with its Alcatel 6111 LockTrac system.

Work will be conducted in two phases. When complete, the entire Leipzig Hub would be centrally and automatically controlled from nine workstations. Train-control managers would be needed only to intervene in exceptional cases or when conducting shunting maneuvers.
