Construction is now underway at all eight stations along the Surrey Langley SkyTrain extension on TransLink’s system in British Columbia.
To open in late 2029, the extension will run about 10 miles on an elevated guideway from King George Station in Surrey to Langley City Centre along the Fraser Highway.
The station construction marks a major milestone for the nearly CA$6 billion project and moves the region closer to better and more connected transit for communities south of the Fraser River, province officials said in a press release.
The provincial government is providing CA$4.4 billion for the project, with the Canadian government contributing CA$1.3 billion — the largest-ever federal public transit investment in British Columbia, they said.
Station foundation work is completed at six stations, with work continuing at 152 Street Station and getting underway at Willowbrook Station. In addition, guideway foundation construction is nearly 90% complete and 75% of the guideway columns are built, province officials said.
"Surrey Langley SkyTrain has been years in the making, and this milestone shows the planning, partnership and sustained investment it takes to deliver a project of this scale,” said TransLink CEO Kevin Quinn.
Once complete, the Surrey Langley SkyTrain will average a 22-minute commute time between the King George and Langley City stations, more than 25 minutes faster than the current bus route, province officials said.
