Rail News: Passenger Rail

Amtrak to limit use of 'Acela' name

It might have surprised Amtrak passengers traveling in the northeast when they bought an Acela ticket and received the national passenger railroad’s typical commuter service rather than the high-speed service they had expected.

So, Amtrak recently decided to use the "Acela" name only for Acela Express service rather than tacking the name onto regional service. Now, Acela Regional will simply be known as Regional.

"It was causing confusion with customers — people didn’t understand there were two services," says Amtrak spokesperson Karina Van Veen.

The change will go into effect March 17.
