Amtrak's Capitol Corridor 'shattered' ridership, revenue records in FY2011

Northern California’s Capitol Corridor Amtrak service posted ridership of more than 1.7 million passengers and generated $27.2 million in revenue in fiscal-year 2011, which ended Sept. 30. The numbers “shattered” ridership and revenue thresholds set in previous fiscal years, Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority (CCJPA) officials said in a prepared statement.

They attributed the gains to the service’s popularity and consistently high on-time performance (OTP).

“Our reliability is due to Union Pacific Railroad’s stellar dispatching and Amtrak’s commitment to improving mechanical performance,” said CCJPA Chairman Bob Franklin. “This year, our OTP hit 95 percent, continuing to keep the Capitol Corridor as the nation’s OTP leader in the Amtrak system for the past two consecutive years.”

The service “ended the year on a high note” with an 11 percent increase in ridership and a 16 percent increase in revenue in September, said CCJPA Managing Director David Kutrosky.
