Last week, Amtrak’s Chicago-to-Grand Rapids, Mich., Pere Marquette service marked its 20th year.

Two decades after its debut, the line is carrying more passengers than ever. In fiscal-year 2003, ridership rose more than 22 percent to 73,392 passengers compared with the previous year. So far, FY2004 ridership is up 13 percent.

Amtrak operates the service daily over CSX Transportation tracks to Grand Rapids, Holland, Bangor, St. Joseph-Benton Harbor and New Buffalo, Mich. Pere Marquette service is financed in part by the Michigan Department of Transportation.
