Atlanta roundtable finalizes list of transportation projects for 2012 tax referendum

On Monday, the Atlanta Regional Transportation Roundtable adopted a final list of $6.1 billion worth of transportation projects that would be partially funded by a penny sales tax proposed by a referendum to be voted on next year.

The list, which outlines regional projects planned for the next 10 years, was whittled down from $22 billion worth of projects identified in earlier lists.

The rail-related projects on the list include:
• the Atlanta Beltline streetcar system;
• various Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) state-of-good-repair and system enhancement work items, such as Airport Station improvements and track rehabilitation;
• MARTA’s North Line extension to State Route 140;
• three bridge replacements where MARTA’s East Line and a CSX Transportation line meet;
• the Interstate 85 North and Clifton transit corridors; and
• an Atlanta-to-Griffin commuter-rail line.

A referendum is scheduled to be held July 31, 2012. If the measure fails, the region cannot reconsider a sales tax for at least 24 months.
