Austin Transit Partnership OKs first phase of light-rail project

Austin Transit Partnership (ATP), city of Austin and Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authority (CapMetro) officials recently approved the first phase of the Austin light-rail transit (LRT) project.

The project will result in a light-rail line that will operate from 38th Street to Oltorf and Yellow Jacket with priority extensions, ATP officials said in a press release. The recommendation was one of five unveiled in March and was selected after planning data analysis, engineering evaluation and community feedback.

ATP was created through the 2020 local election in which voters approved Project Connect — an initiative to improve and expand public transportation in central Texas — and the formation of an entity to oversee the program. Since then, ATP has worked with CapMetro and city officials to plan for Austin’s first light-rail system, which will be integrated into existing transit lines, ATP officials said.

Next steps include an independent environmental impact study.
