Rail News: Passenger Rail

BART adding service to Richmond-Millbrae Line

Starting Sept. 10, Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) will expand service on the Richmond-Millbrae Line (red line) as part of an effort to improve service at the end of the evening commute.

BART will add four trips to Richmond-Millbrae in each direction so the line will operate for an additional hour in each direction to provide more service, agency officials said in a prepared statement.

The service increase also will help riders on other lines by increasing the number of trains serving San Francisco.

“BART chose this service increase based on a thorough analysis of how to increase capacity in an economical way,” agency officials said.

BART operates one of the oldest fleets in the nation. Until new vehicles are received as part of “Fleet of the Future” initiative over the next few years, the agency’s ability to add service requiring additional cars will remain limited, BART officials said.
