Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) and the Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority on Wednesday unveiled a plan to build a second transbay rail crossing and increase rail connections throughout Northern California.

Formerly known as the New Transbay Rail Crossing, the Link21 Program features various projects that will provide more services, faster connections and better access to jobs, BART and authority officials said in a joint press release.

One of the major projects is a new transbay rail crossing between Oakland and San Francisco that would increase capacity and add new passenger-rail connections and service, including the potential for a direct, one-seat ride between Sacramento and San Francisco. It's included in the regional Play Bay Area 250 Final Blueprint as a key strategy for building a next-generation transit system.

"As we continue to offer vital services to our passengers during these challenging times, we are also looking ahead to the future," said BART General Manager Bob Powers. "Link21 will connect passengers to the places they want to go throughout the megaregion."

BART Measure RR bond and Metropolitan Transportation Commission's Regional Measure 3 funds and others will help support the cost of developing the new crossing. Link21 officials plan to host meetings to solicit public feedback on the program and possible alternatives.
