BART lists top achievements for 2021


In 2021, BART ridership returned to near pre-pandemic levels.

Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) has reported its top accomplishments in 2021, including improvements to the rider experience, personal safety, infrastructure and stations.

The San Francisco transit agency's achievements included:
• the replacement of 7.5 miles of track, two major interlockings and 66 miles of power cables;
• a return to near pre-pandemic levels of service and hours Monday through Saturday in August, with a commitment to improve Sunday service in February 2022;
• the installation of MERV-14 air filters on all trains to filter out virus particles like coronavirus;
• improvements to train interior and station interior cleanliness metrics;
• a roll-out of pay-by-phone options;
• new BART and Caltrain transfer timetables to increase transparency about connection times at Millbrae;
• additional safety staff that helped lead to a 37% drop in violent crime in 2021 and 21% drop in crime overall as ridership increased;
• completion of El Cerrito del Norte Station's modernization;
• installation of three new escalators in downtown San Francisco;
• the use of stations and parking lots for COVID-19 vaccination and testing sites;
• the launch of the Link21 program to transform Northern California’s rail network with an eye on equity;
• implementation of certified electric power supply as 100% greenhouse gas free;
• the award of $73.2 million worth of contracts to small, minority and women-owned businesses; and
• implementation of a COVID-19 vaccine mandate for BART employees.
