Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) earlier this week announced plans to eliminate the sale of paper magstrip tickets at four stations this summer as part of a phaseout of all such tickets by 2020.

BART is working toward a card-only fare payment system. The Clipper card system is reusable and accepted by nearly all transit agencies in the region, BART officials said in a press release.

Paper tickets will no longer be sold at the following stations as of the stated dates: Downtown Berkeley on July 8; 19th Street, July 12; Embarcadero, Aug. 19; and Powell Street, Sept. 3.

While paper tickets no longer will be available for purchase at those stations, riders will be able to use them to enter or exit through fare gates.
