The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) has approved the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) to enter the New Starts development phase of the FTA's Capital Investment Grants (CIG) program for the Red Line Extension project, CTA officials announced this week.

During the two-year project development phase, the CTA will complete the project’s final environmental impact statement and preliminary engineering documents for the $2.3 billion Red Line Extension project, which will extend the Red Line 5.6 miles from the existing terminal at 95th/Dan Ryan to 130th Street.

The proposed extension would include four new stations near 103rd Street, 111th Street, Michigan Avenue and 130th Street.

CTA included $310 million for the project in its 2020 capital budget. Advancing through the CIG program will enable the CTA to apply for more than $1 billion in federal funds to fund the extension, CTA officials said in a press release.

The project is slated to start construction in 2023, with service beginning in 2029.
