The Chicago Transit Authority has awarded a $15.3 million construction contract to John Burns Construction Co. LLC for a major renovation of the Austin Green Line Station.

Crews will reconstruct the main stationhouse and add an elevator and escalator, ramp, stairs and platform for riders who use mobility devices, CTA officials said in a press release. The project is part of CTA’s All Stations Accessibility Program, which aims to make all CTA rail stations fully accessible by 2038.

The station opened in 1899 on the street level and has not been upgraded since it was rebuilt in 1962, CTA officials said.

The project will be funded with $20.3 million in federal dollars and $5.3 million from the Rebuild Illinois program. A project timeline has not yet been announced.

CTA has made fully accessible 30 stations on its L system in the past decade, according to the transit authority’s website. Today, 103 of 145 stations — or about 70% — are accessible.
