Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) late last week resumed rail service on its Yellow Line after determining it "safe" following a Nov. 16, 2023, train collision near the Howard Station.
The announcement came after analysis and testing following the collision between a CTA train and snow removal equipment. The CTA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have been reviewing and re-evaluating safety protocols over the past several weeks. The CTA has examined all aspects of Yellow Line operations, from track and signals to train operations and communications. Several test trains have run along the line, over multiple days in various weather conditions, CTA officials said in a press release.
To support the reopening, the CTA outlined several interim safety enhancements "out of an abundance of caution," according to CTA officials.
Those measures include:
• Yellow Line trains will run at reduced speeds of 35 mph, down from 55 mph;• manual blocking on the rails for nontransport vehicles; and• supervisory personnel accompanying operators on the first few Yellow Line runs.
