CTA set to start last key stage of North Belmont Red-Purple reconstruction

The Chicago Transit Authority this fall will launch the final major stage of the North Belmont Red-Purple reconstruction as part of the Red and Purple Modernization (RPM) Phase One project.

The final major stage marks the next milestone for the RPM — completing new elevated track structure north of Belmont Station and reaching the two-thirds completion point for that project section, CTA officials said in a press release.

The North Belmont Red-Purple project has two major components: the new Red-Purple Bypass, which opened in November 2021; and the full reconstruction of 0.3 miles of southbound track structure north of Belmont Station to Newport/Cornelia avenues south of the Addison Red Line Station.

Along with the new Red and Purple line tracks being finished this fall, the bypass allows trains to travel more efficiently with fewer delays, and provide CTA with the capacity to add trains to meet ridership demand.

"Combined with the new tracks recently opened between Lawrence and Bryn Mawr earlier this year, we have now built nearly 2 miles of new tracks under the RPM project," said CTA President Dorval Carter Jr.

Walsh-Fluor is the contractor for the RPM project.
