The Green Line Board in Calgary, Alberta, last week approved two joint-venture construction firms to submit proposals on the first phase of construction of the Green Line light-rail transit project.

Following a request for qualifications process, the board approved Bow Transit Connectors, which includes Barnard Constructors of Canada, Flatiron Constructors Canada Ltd. and WSP Canada Inc.; and City Link Partners, which includes Aecon Infrastructure Management Inc., Dragados Canada Inc., Acciona Infrastructure Canada Inc., Parsons Inc. and AECOM Canada Ltd.

The first phase, which includes the nearly 12-mile core of line and its most technically complex section, is the largest infrastructure project in the Calgary's history, city officials said in a press release. The line eventually will support a light-rail expansion to the north and south.

The city expects to release a request for proposals by the end of the third quarter. One of the joint-venture firms will be selected next year as the project’s development partner, Calgary officials said. Then a 12-month development phase will begin for collaboration, design and cost-risk analysis activities.

"The Green Line is confidently moving forward with ... two very strong proponent teams. With extensive competition due to record investment in global transit, to have attracted their collective expertise is a great endorsement of the project,” said Green Line Board Chair Don Fairbairn.
