On Jan. 27, the Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit District (SMART) will conduct a symposium in Petaluma, Calif., for contractors to provide information on upcoming construction contracts.

SMART plans to establish an initial 40-mile passenger-rail segment in an existing freight-rail corridor between San Rafael and Santa Rosa, Calif. Revenue service is slated for late 2014. SMART is preparing to advertise bids for construction contracts.

One of the first contracts will involve the reconstruction of track, grade crossings and minor bridges. SMART plans to award a design-build contract for the work through a two-step qualification and proposal procurement process.

A request for qualifications will be advertised on or about Feb. 1, according to SMART.
