Caltrain has named Pranaya Shrestha interim chief officer of its modernization program to succeed John Funghi, who plans to depart the agency at the end of 2021.

Shrestha has 30 years of railroading experience, including experience with both commuter-rail and light-rail systems. He has played a role in 19 major transit projects totaling more than $9 billion and has worked on transit-rail projects in Denver, Los Angeles, San Francisco,Seattle, Portland, Oregon; and Orlando, Florida.

Much of the civil infrastructure work for the electrification project is progressing as expected, Caltrain officials said in a news release. The majority of the remaining work involves signal and systems integration work. The start of electrification testing is scheduled to start by year's end.

Caltrain also has marked the completion of the 25th Avenue grade separation project. In cooperation with the city of San Mateo, California, Caltrain raised the tracks and slightly lowered the road at E. 25th Avenue, which has been one of the agency’s busiest grade crossings in the city due to its proximity to the San Mateo County Event Center.

The project also included east-west street connections at 28th and 31st Avenues to comply with the San Mateo rail corridor transit-oriented development plan.
