Caltrain to raise fares, cut four midday trains

On Jan. 1, Caltrain plans to increase fares for each zone by 25 cents and eliminate four midday trains as part of a plan to close a $2.3 million shortfall in the fiscal-year 2010 operating budget.

The plan, approved by Caltrain's board in October, also calls for price increases on multi-ride tickets and passes, according to a prepared statement.

The fare for a one-way ticket from San Francisco to San Jose will increase to $8.50 from $7.75, generating about $1.4 million in additional revenue in FY2010, Caltrain said. The last fare increase occurred in January 2009. Eliminating the four midday trains will save the agency about $160,000, Caltrain estimates.

Also, the employer-sponsored annual pass known as "Go Pass," which will increase to $155 from $140, is expected to raise an additional $150,000, enough to cover the program's cost, Caltrain said.
