The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) last week announced it awarded $202 million to 143 local, clean transportation projects to prioritize public transit and electric vehicle options in communities affected by pollution.
The projects are funded by California Climate Investment (CCI) through the Low Carbon Transit Operation Program (LCTOP) which has invested over $1.4 billion in carbon reduction projects over the past decade, according to a Caltrans press release.
The CCI steers billions of Cap-and-Invest Program dollars towards strengthening the economy and improving public health and the environment.
Projects awarded LCTOP funding include: • Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority's Metro A-Line light-rail operations, $48.7 million. The expanded transit service serves 44 stations and runs seven days a week; • Bay Area Rapid Transit District, BART-to-Antioch extension, using state-of-the-art diesel multiple unit vehicles, $10.8 million; • Sacramento Regional Transit System, convert up to 19 light-rail stations to low-floor platforms on the SacRT Blue Line, $2.4 million; and• Central Contra Costa Transit Authority, transit bus service from Amtrak Martinez Station to BART North Concord/Martinez Station connecting regional rail and job centers, $474,670.
The full list of projects is available here.
LCTOP has funded 1,548 projects to help local transit agencies launch new or expanded transit services, purchase zero-emission fleet vehicles, build zero-emission infrastructure and make public transportation more affordable, Caltrans officials said.
