Caltrans mulls construction of new light-rail service

In a newly-released draft document, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) and the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LACMTA) are considering constructing a light-rail service between East Los Angeles and Pasadena, among four other proposals addressing a gap between two of the area's freeway systems.

The agencies released on March 6 the Draft Environmental Impact Report/Environmental Impact Statement (EIR/EIS) in accordance with state and federal laws. Drawing on 26 technical studies, the report offers five different transportation solutions, including light rail, a rapid bus line, a freeway tunnel, a new traffic management system or simply leaving the area as is.

"We look forward to receiving valuable input from communities and the public on this critically important transportation issue that has affected not only this area, but the region, for decades," said Caltrans District 7 Director Carrie Bowen. "The feedback we receive is a vital part of the project development process and helps inform the selection of a preferred alternative."

The release of this report begins a 120-day public comment period, during which the agencies will host public hearings to solicit feedback.
