Construction advances on TransLink's Evergreen Line station plazas

Station plazas for TransLink's Evergreen Line extension project will be built over the summer, Transport Canada officials announced yesterday.

A $1.5 million (in Canadian dollars) contract has been awarded to Jacob Brothers Construction to build the Inlet Centre Station and Moody Centre Station plazas. Work is expected to begin mid-May and finish by the end of summer, Transport Canada officials said in a press release.

Construction is underway on the Burquitlam Station plaza, while a third contract will be awarded for the Coquitlam Centre, Lincoln and Lafarge Lake-Douglas station plazas.

The 6.8-mile, $1.43 billion Evergreen Line will serve as an extension to the existing SkyTrain system in Vancouver, British Columbia. The route will provide a 15-minute connection between the city of Coquitlam and the Lougheed Town Centre shopping mall in Burnaby.

When the extension is completed, the SkyTrain system will become the longest fully automated rapid transit system in the world, according to the project's website.

The line, now 85 percent finished, is expected to open in early 2017.
