Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) Dec. 18 opened its first subway station, Cityplace Station, 10 stories below North Central Expressway.

The 3.25-mile tunnel connecting downtown and north Dallas opened in January 1997. During its construction, excavators also hollowed out the shell where Cityplace was built.

Interior completion of the $50 million, tri-level station began in February 1999. Cityplace Station includes a concourse, mezzanine and platforms. Four of the six escalators range from 128 to 138 feet long. Two inclinators (inclined escalators) may convey up to 16 people vertically and horizontally 138 feet.

DART also plans to open White Rock Station in Garland, Texas, this fall; Park Lane Station in Richardson, 2002; and another station in Plano, 2003.

Meanwhile, Trinity Railway Express (TRE), formed through a partnership between DART and Forth Worth Transportation Authority, plans to open two downtown Fort Worth stations in late 2001.

In fiscal-year 2000, ended Sept. 30, TRE ridership increased 18.5 percent to 767.2 million passenger trips from 647.6 million trips in FY1999.
