The Regional Transportation District (RTD) of Denver, Uber and Masabi yesterday launched Uber Transit ticketing, enabling rail and bus riders to buy and access tickets within the Uber ride-hailing mobile app.

Following a staggered rollout over the next few weeks, Uber Transit will allow riders in the Denver metro region to enter a destination in the Uber app, select the “Transit” option and purchase a ticket.  When boarding a train or bus, riders then activate the ticket, according to an RTD press release.

“For the first time ever, taking an Uber trip can mean taking public transit,” said David Reich, Uber’s head of transit. “We are excited to expand our collaboration with RTD and Masabi to make Denver the first city in the world where riders can purchase transit tickets and ride public transit seamlessly through the Uber app.”

The app also provides users access to real-time transit schedules and walking directions to and from stations.

“The future of mobility in our cities relies on innovative agencies like RTD taking the right approach and ensuring that public transit is at the core of the emerging mobility ecosystem, and we’re confident more cities will follow their lead,” said Brian Zanghi, chief executive officer at Masabi.

Masabi is a software-as-a-service company that creates fare collection platforms for transit agencies. The company first launched mobile ticketing services within the RTD Mobile Tickets app in 2017.
