Design work starts for SacRT extension

Sacramento Regional Transit District (SacRT) Jan. 15 selected DMJM+HARRIS, an AECOM Technology Corp. division, to begin design work on its Folsom-Amtrak Light-Rail Extension project, which would add to the existing system 14 light-rail vehicles, six stations and nearly 11 miles of track — including some double-track segments and second-track additions to existing single-track segments.

As lead consultant, DMJM+HARRIS would extend the system from its east end four-and-a-half miles to downtown Folsom, and design four stations — two with park-and-ride lots. The firm also would design a 0.7-mile double-track segment connecting SacRT with Amtrak’s commuter and intercity services.

"This project is one step that is being taken to not only reduce congestion on Route 50, but to enhance the multi-modal connectivity in downtown Sacramento," said DMJM+HARRIS Officer In Charge Neil Harris in a prepared statement.

Designs are under way and slated for December completion; construction would start in 2002 and conclude by September 2003.
