The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) has given the green light to the Sacramento Regional Transit District (SacRT) to enter final design for the South Line Phase 2 light-rail extension.

The FTA approval represents a milestone for the project, which will extend the Blue Line 4.3 miles to Cosumnes River College, SacRT officials said in a prepared statement. The $270 million project will feature four new stations.

The agency already had received FTA approval to begin construction on two major aspects of the project: Construction of a five-level parking structure at the college, which began in November 2011, and construction of two light-rail bridges that began in May.

The agency “has successfully overcome many numerous hurdles to reach this critical milestone for the South Line Phase 2 light-rail extension,” Rep. Doris Matsui (D-Calif.) said.

The Blue Line extension is slated for completion in September 2015.
