FTA signs off on environmental document for San Diego trolley project

The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) last week issued a record of decision for the final supplemental environmental impact statement on the Mid-Coast Corridor Transit trolley project in San Diego.

Approval of the environmental review marks a milestone for the project, which would extend trolley service from the Santa Fe Depot in downtown San Diego to the University City area, according to a San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) press release.

"Obtaining the record of decision from the FTA brings us closer to providing fast, reliable transit service to dozens of communities and regional assets like the VA Hospital and UC San Diego," said Ron Roberts, a SANDAG board member.

The next step will require SANDAG's board to certify the state environmental review, which is expected to occur next month. In May, SANDAG chose Mid Coast Transit Constructors — a joint venture between Stacy & Witbeck Inc., Skanska USA and Herzog Contracting Corp. — to serve as the construction manager/general contractor for the project.
