Construction recently began on a pedestrian bridge at GO Transit's station in Pickering, Ontario, to provide commuters access over Highway 401 to the new downtown core.

The enclosed, 820-foot bridge will link GO Transit parking at the base of an office tower north of Highway 401 to the station and platforms on the south side. The parking lot also is under construction.

The federal and provincial governments each will contribute $5 million toward the bridge project's cost, GO Transit officials said in a prepared statement. GO Transit will provide the remaining $12.5 million.

Meanwhile, Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority's (VTA) board recently awarded the Blossom Hill pedestrian bridge construction contract to Gordon N. Ball Inc., a San Francisco contractor.

Construction of the pedestrian/bicycle bridge, which will cross over Monterey Highway and Union Pacific Railroad tracks, is scheduled to begin in late February, VTA officials said in a prepared statement. The new bridge will be located just south of the existing Blossom Hill Road vehicle bridge in southern San Jose, Calif.

With initial funding from San Jose, VTA secured $10.5 million in Federal Highway Administration funding, state transportation bonds and Measure A funds for design and construction. The 315-foot long, 12-foot wide bridge will be built with prefabricated steel.
