GO Transit, Metrolinx and Canadian officials plan to mark the opening of a new parking structure and station building at the Erindale GO station in Mississauga, Ontario, on Sept. 3.

The $67.6 million project (in Canadian dollars) involved the construction of a six-level structure that features a 1,500-space parking garage and new station under one roof, Canadian government officials said in a press release.

The additional parking "will provide Mississauga residents with better access to public transit which, in turn, will help to reduce local traffic congestion and cut commute times," said Lisa Raitt, minister of transport.

The project also included a new bus loop, pick-up and drop-off area, covered pedestrian bridge, and eco-friendly features such as LED lighting and solar panels. The panels are expected to cut energy costs at the station by 73 percent, government officials said.

The governments of Canada and Ontario each contributed up to $33.8 million to fund the project.
