HDR Inc. has been tapped to lead final design for GoTriangle's $2.48 billion Durham-Orange light-rail project in North Carolina.HDR's team will design all 16 bridge structures on the project, and lead engineering and architecture for infrastructure along the entire 17.7-mile alignment. In addition, the company will lead track design, traffic management, utility relocation, site planning and roadway design, HDR officials said in a press release. The company previously performed environmental studies and geotechnical engineering for the project. The Durham-Orange line will run from Chapel Hill in the west to Durham in the east. The route will include stations to serve three major universities in the area. "We're proud to help GoTriangle bring the region’s first rail-transit system online as more and more people move to the region and are looking for reliable alternatives to driving," said HDR Transit Director Tom Waldron. The Federal Transit Administration last month approved advancing the project into the engineering phase of the Capital Investment Grant program.
