Bi-State Development's board (BSD), which oversees Metro Transit-St. Louis, this week awarded HNTB Corp. a $7 million contract to design the MetroLink Secure Platform Plan project.
The $52 million project calls for creating centralized, secure rider-access points at 27 MetroLink stations in St. Louis County and 12 stations in St. Clair County, Illinois, Metro Transit-St. Louis officials said in a press release. A new fare payment system will control the access gates used to enter station platforms.
The project also features new CCTV technology to upgrade security and new fencing.
"We are going to transition an open access light-rail system into a closed access system," said BSD President and CEO Taulby Roach. "Every station is viewed as its own project because the platform entrances and exits are all different at each station.”
The design process is expected to take more than a year to complete, Metro Transit-St. Louis officials said. The construct bid proposal will be released after the final design is completed. Construction is expected to last 24 to 30 months.
The project will be paid for with federal funds, private donations and by Metro Transit-St. Louis funding partners.
