The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) has named the IBI Group the lead architect on the Line 1 Subway Enhancement Program. The IBI Group will manage the review and development of facility station modification requirements for an 11-year program that was designed to deliver capacity upgrades to manage increased ridership.
IBI will review passenger and design capacities and develop design features that address demand requirements 30 years beyond the target completion date of 2031, using growth forecasts provided by the TTC and the City of Toronto, according to an IBA Group press release.
Wayfinding, signage and accessibility will be central considerations throughout the design process. Work on the project started in December 2020.
Toronto Line 1 is the busiest rapid transit line in Canada, serving more than 850,000 customers per day pre-COVID.
