Indiana transportation district to analyze operations in Chicago

The Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District (NICTD) recently contracted SYSTRA Consulting to conduct an operations simulation and capacity analysis study.

The study will determine the feasibility of operating additional trains on a 14.5-mile portion of the Metra Electric District (MED) between Chicago’s Millenium and Kensington stations. Currently, NICTD operates 37 trains daily over the track, while the Northeast Illinois Regional Commuter Railroad Corp. (Metra) operates 170 trains over all or part of the mostly four-track segment.

SYSTRA will use its RAILSIM® Simulation Software Suite to create a computer simulation model of the study territory and present operations. The firm will create several versions of the simulation to reflect existing and conceptual infrastructure upgrades.
