Keolis Commuter Services, the operating and maintenance partner for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority's commuter-rail service, reported that more than 29 million individual trips were taken in 2025 as of Dec. 4.
This is the second year Keolis has produced the TRACKed campaign. It is based on Spotify Wrapped, the music streaming app's popular year-in-review initiative, and uses data to highlight the positive impact of passenger rail on the communities it serves, Keolis officials said in a press release.
Keolis estimates that each trip on commuter rail versus a motor vehicle trip saves an average of 14 lbs. of carbon emissions. MBTA commuter-rail trains traveled over 5 million miles in the year, saving approximately 406 million pounds of carbon emissions from motor vehicle travel. The TRACKed campaign also highlights how passengers use MBTA commuter rail travel time for leisure activities and socialization, rather than driving.
The MBTA commuter rail added a new line of service in 2025, boosting ridership. The Fall River and New Bedford line connects Boston to both South Coast cities, splitting at East Taunton. It includes six new stations and a total of 37 new miles of track, Keolis officials said. So far, nearly 900,000 trips have been taken to and from those stations.
"The TRACKed campaign exemplifies the many reasons that traveling on transit is the premier choice for the public, and I’m proud to see our operating partners at Keolis focus on our passengers so prominently," said Interim Massachusetts Department of Transportation Secretary and MBTA General Manager Phillip Eng.
