Last week, Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s (LACMTA) board approved a long-range transportation plan (LRTP) designed to guide transportation development in the region through 2040.

During the next 30 years, the county’s population is projected to grow by about 3 million. The LRTP examines the impacts of population growth on mobility and offers recommendations on ways to address those impacts within anticipated revenues.

According to the plan, LACMTA will collect and distribute $298 billion in revenue through fiscal-year 2040, including dollars from local, state, and federal transportation funding sources. Rail and bus operations account for 36 percent, or $106.5 billion, of the forecasted revenue uses, while rail and bus capital account for 19 percent, or $57.6 billion.

Components of the LRTP include the completion of the Eastside and Exposition Phase II light-rail projects; the downtown regional connector;
San Fernando Valley North/South Metro Orange Line extension; Eastside Light Rail Access project; Gold Line Foothill light-rail extension; Green Line extension to L.A. International Airport; Westside subway extension to Fairfax/Century City/Westwood; and California high-speed rail line into L.A. County.

LACMTA now will submit the LRTP to the Southern California Association of Governments, which will consider whether to include the measure in its regional transportation plan.
