The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) next month will reconfigure a portion of Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles to make way for the future Wilshire/La Brea subway station.

The work marks the agency's first major station construction for the planned Metro Purple Line Extension project, which will add 9 miles and several new stations to L.A.'s subway. The new route will run westward from the subway's current terminus at Wilshire/Western.

The first 4-mile section of the Purple Line extension is now under construction and is scheduled to be operational in 2023.

The extension is expected to cost $7.2 billion, according to the project's fact sheet.
