The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) on Wednesday will hold an open house for its project to modernize Union Station.Known as Link Union Station, the project calls for transforming the station from a "dead-end" stop into a "run-through" one by extending tracks south over the US-101 highway. Currently, all commuter and intercity trains enter and exit Union Station through a five-track entrance on the north of the station. This configuration often results in 20-minute or longer idle time for trains at the station platform area, according to Metro's website on the project. The project would enable Metrolink and Amtrak trains to enter and exit Union Station from the south, and accommodate future high-speed rail service at the station with a new lead track and optimized rail yard. The project also calls for a passenger concourse with retail, food service, waiting areas and other amenities, Metro officials wrote in a blog post."The idea is to make it easier for trains to get into and out of the station," they said.Environmental studies are underway, and Metro is working to secure funding needed to build the project, according to the blog.
