The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LACMTA) has begun advanced utility relation work for the Crenshaw/LAX Transit Corridor project.

The work is being performed under the first contract awarded as part of a new project labor agreement, which the agency and building trades signed to implement a targeted hiring program that will help provide jobs to economically disadvantaged workers, LACMTA officials said in a prepared statement.

Advanced utility relocation work for the Crenshaw/LAX light-rail line will be performed at 10 locations in the corridor in advance of awarding a design-build contract for the project, they said.

Metro Builders & Engineers Group, under contract with LACMTA, will perform the $8.6 million utility relocation work.

The project labor agreement, which was negotiated with the Los Angeles/Orange County Building Trades Council and approved by the LACMTA’s board, will help facilitate the timely completion of transit and highway projects in L.A. County that are being funded by Measure R, a local half-cent sales tax approved by county voters in November 2008, LACMTA officials said. Many of the projects also will be funded with federal dollars.
