MTA Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) didn't just set a ridership record in 2008, the commuter railroad also posted its best-ever on-time performance (OTP). At 95.14 percent, the OTP reached its highest level since modern record-keeping began in 1979. LIRR's previous OTP high of 94.07 percent was set in 2007.

In addition, morning peak-period OTP hit a record 95.43 percent and off-peak OTP reached a best-ever 95.32 percent. Evening peak-period OTP totaled 93.87 percent.

LIRR attained record performance even though the railroad operated 1,368 more trains last year vs. 2007. Agency officials attribute the OTP increases to mechanical department improvements.
